General Rules for Tennis and Pickleball Play

Due to COVID-19, reservations are required, please call the Office at 969-6663 Ext. 3 or 7.
Additional COVID safety measures may be in place and could change without notice.

General Rules

  1. Court shoes with non-marking soles shall be required footwear on the courts.
  2. Tennis attire is preferred. Shirts must be worn at all times on the courts.
  3. Courts may be reserved only for tournaments; HYC sanctioned USTA team matches, and instruction.
  4. Only tennis may be played on the courts 1 and 2. Court 3 is for pickleball. If Court 3 is vacant, tennis may be played until needed by pickle ball players. The tennis players will relinquish Court 3 to pickleball players at completion of current set.
  5. Walking through courts during play or instruction is not permitted.
  6. Gates should be closed when entering or leaving the courts.
  7. Courts 1 & 2 are to be considered equal for court play.
  8. Court 2 is reserved for tennis clinics on Saturday until noon.

Occupied Courts 1 & 2

  1. Courts will be relinquished immediately following the current set in play.
  2. When a court becomes available, the players next up must take the available court or rotate to last in line.
  3. Singles and doubles play have equal priority.
  4. All players must be present and occupy a court when it is available or allow the next group to use the court.
  5. Players must use the racquet holder system for their turn on next open court.
  6. Courts may be used for practice; however, the court must be relinquished after 45 minutes if players are waiting.
  7. It is the responsibility of players to observe that other players are waiting (using racquet holder system).
  8. When taking a court, warm up is limited to 5 minutes when players are waiting.
  9. Score-tenders located at each net should be used to record set score as courtesy to waiting players or observers.
  10. At 6-6 set score, a 7 point tie-breaker should be played when players are waiting.

Occupied Court 3

  1. If all four pickleball courts are in use and players are waiting, players will relinquish their court after their game is finished..
  2. When a court becomes available, the players next up must take the available court or rotate to last in line.
  3. Singles and doubles play has equal priority.
  4. All players must be present and occupy a court when it is available or allow the next group to the court.
  5. Courts may be used for practice; however, the court must be relinquished after 45 minutes if players are waiting.
  6. If players are waiting, warm-up is limited to 5 minutes.
  7. It is the responsibility of players to observe that other players are waiting. Players will wait in the table area outside Court 3.
  8. If all three courts are occupied by tennis player and pickleball players arrive, the tennis player will relinquish Court 3 to pickleball at the completion of current set.

Guest

  1. All members must sign in and register their guests by name.
  2. Members sponsoring guests must be present when their guests are on the property.
  3. Guest fees apply for USTA and other HYC sanctioned league matches or practices. All non-members attending or participating in USTA or other HYC sanctioned league matches or practices are considered guest and the sponsoring member(s) will be assessed the usual guest fees.

Groups

As pertains to any activity on the HYC premises, the member(s) that sponsor(s) a group of ten or more must notify the business office and provide the office with a list of all members and guests that will participate in or observe the activity.   Note that the office is closed on the weekend; hence for weekend events notification must be provided in advance.

With respect to the tennis and pickelball facilities, any number of members and guests that have specifically convened to play together or observe each other play is considered a group, regardless of number of members. For example, 2 members and 6 guests (non-members) with the intent of playing with each other or observing each other play is considered one group regardless of how the two members choose to share the sponsorship of the six non-members.

Guests include players and non-players.

Junior Play

  1. Juniors are defined as players less than 15 years of age.
  2. Juniors will have equal status with adults except after 4:00 pm on weekdays.
  3. During the exception period, juniors shall give immediate access to waiting adults, unless playing with an adult member. 

Tournaments

  1. Tennis and Pickleball Tournaments shall be under the direction of the Tennis Committee.
  2. Courts may be reserved for tournament play and Hilo Yacht Club team USTA League matches.
  3. Tournaments and other scheduled tennis events take priority for courts 1 & 2 in all cases.

Instruction

  1. The day and time (start and stop) for all scheduled lessons must be posted weekly in advance on the bulletin board in the pavilion by the respective instructor.
  2. Instruction schedules should also be listed on HYC web site and updated on a weekly basis.
  3. Instructors must register with the business office prior to giving instruction. If the instructor is a non-member, the sponsoring member will register the instructor with the business office.
  4. All instructors must meet the HYC Approved Tennis Instructor (ATI) rules.
  5. All instructors must be accompanied by their sponsoring member.
  6. No solicitation allowed.
  7. Non-member instructors are not subject to guest fees..
  8. Personal use by a non-member instructor of the tennis courts or any other HYC facility is prohibited unless signed in as a guest of a sponsoring member.
  9. The Athletic Committee can make decisions regarding tennis lessons/clinic schedules without trustees’ approval.
