Club Update: May 29, 2020
|Aloha Hilo Yacht Club Ohana,|
It is with great pleasure I am able to share the Hilo Yacht Club phased reopening plan with you. The last few months have been challenging on many levels, and I did not want to build false hope or send you weekly changes of plans that would add even more stress to an already uncertain time. I know how important the Hilo Yacht Club is to you and the role we play in your family’s lives. We are working hard to prepare your club and make the changes necessary to ensure your safety and to comply with a sometimes bewildering array of rules and regulations.
We have created a phased reopening plan that, (at this date anyway), aligns with Federal, State, and Local orders. Additionally, for everyone’s safety, HYC will be members-only – no guests will be allowed during our reopening phase.
The plan is going to go like this:
1. Open the Tennis and Pickleball courts for play on Monday, June 1, 2020. 7 AM to 6 PM.
Hilo Yacht Club is serious about your health. For us to do our part in keeping members safe, those wishing to play tennis or pickleball must follow social distancing rules and guidelines set by the USTA. Instead of listing all the suggestions here, please follow this link: USTA COVID RULES
In addition to the guidelines by the USTA, the following rules will apply:
a) Courts will be open from 7 AM to 6:00 PM daily during Phase One.
b) Tennis players will park in the main parking lot.
c) Because the bathhouse building is closed, restrooms will be available in the main Clubhouse. Enter through the front doors.
d) Members are encouraged to limit social interaction and to avoid congregating before and after play. The tennis pavilion may be used, following distancing guidelines.
e) There may be pent up demand for outdoor activities like tennis and pickleball, so we urge you to practice patience with your fellow members while observing social distancing.
f) All members must sign in and are encouraged to wear masks from their cars to the courts.
g) No guests at this time.
h) You will need to bring your own ice and water. HYC will not supply refreshments during phase one.
i) Court Times must be reserved in advance. Please call Cheryl at the HYC office to make your reservation for play. 969-6663 ext 7. The reservation line is open M/F 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. No reservations are taken after hours.
j) All participants will be required to sign a COVID liability waiver prior to play. We’ll email one to you after you call to make your reservation. It will need to be signed by all participants and returned to the HYC office prior to play.
k) Court time will be two hours maximum per reservation.
Open the volleyball court for play, Monday, June 1st, 2020. 7 AM to 6 PM.
a) See the rules regarding showers and bathrooms above.
b) We urge you to read and follow the guidelines set by USA Volleyball.
c) Reservations are required. Please call Cheryl at the HYC office to make your reservation for play. 969-6663 ext 7. The reservation line is open M/F 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. No reservations are taken after hours.
d) During Phase One, volleyball will be open to MEMBERS ONLY.
e) All participants will be required to sign a COVID liability waiver prior to play. When you call to reserve your court time, we’ll email you the release form. It will need to be signed by all participants and returned to the HYC office prior to play.
2. Phase Two Plan: HYC Ocean Lanai and Grounds will be available for you to enjoy, plus a limited to go menu starting on Monday, June 8th from 11 AM to 5 PM daily.
Tennis and volleyball hours will remain from 7 AM to 6:00 PM daily. The entire kitchen has been emptied and we will begin restoring equipment after a major deep cleaning. It will take time to restock and rebuild inventory. Our suppliers are having trouble locating some of our “usual” items due to supply chain disruptions from the Mainland. Beef, pork, and chicken products have been most affected. Opening dining a week after other establishments will give Hilo Yacht Club the opportunity to learn from others’ mistakes, and better comply with federal, state, and county orders for your safety. Chef Marcus is working on a menu that will be available “To Go” style from 11 AM to 5 PM daily. We will have the menu posted on the HYC web site ASAP.
The following rules and guidelines will apply during Phase Two:
a) The main parking lot and the clubhouse bathrooms will be open, but the HYC bar and interior dining rooms will remain closed for seating. Outdoor, Lanai and to go dining only.
b) All food and drink orders will take place at the Ocean Lanai window, or over the phone.
c) All orders will be “self-service”. In the beginning, there will be minimal servers interacting with the membership.
d) There will be limited bar service.
e) Tables, chairs, and picnic tables will be spaced to help social distancing
f) All members entering HYC will be required to sign in, even for dining. g) The HYC property will be open from 7 AM to 6 PM daily.
h) Tennis and Volleyball courts will be open from 7 AM to 6 PM daily.
i) The swimming pool and pool building will remain off-limits at this time. No showers, lockers or Gym access.
There is one more bit of exciting news to share with you:
The Board of Trustees voted to move forward on the much-needed repairs to the HYC swimming pool. Many of you have noticed and commented on the alarming rate of deteriorating plaster and surface staining in the pool. We have selected a highly rated pool contracting company, and the work will be scheduled to take place as soon as possible to remedy both the plaster and failing mechanical systems. We realize extending the pool closure may cause some of you understandable annoyance. We acknowledge it is a great time to be outdoors at your Club enjoying the pool. That said, it’s also a great time to take care of some much needed deferred maintenance before the failing plaster and piping require costly emergency repairs and an even lengthier shutdown. At this point, I do not have an official open date for the HYC pool.
We are currently working on Phase 3, (pool opening) and 4, (Bar and Dining) plus a member party to celebrate your Club’s reopening. Soon as I have solid information, I will send it your way.
Looking forward to seeing you back at your Club soon!
Chuck and the rest of the HYC staff.
